The Disdain Factor (games)
For children there are special rules about games and toys. Some games and toys they know they will outgrow. When they do, they look down on kids who still play with them. There is a “disdain factor” at work. As a result, for such toys and games, children tend not to play with them around older kids. This age grouping of toys and games tends to result in the sale of more toys and games -- at least in the USA.
Some games however are free of this disdain factor. Most notable are Monopoly, chess and checkers. All ages play with equal interest. In the orient, shogi (a version of chess), go (a board game) and/or gomoku (played on a Go board) are widely played and all are free of this disdain factor.
An older child watches a younger one playing a game (say of chess or go) and looks for the quality of play -- after all in a few years (or even now) he or she may become (or may now be) a tough opponent. The issue of age disappears.
