Fish Cat & Bear Bear -- The Blue Fish

Fish Cat and Bear Bear were really strangers and rarely saw each other.

Once in awhile however they went sailing together — but they never spoke much to each other. They had a boat — well a sort of a boat — called the Sea Turkey.

The only really good thing about the Sea Turkey was that it was always filled with tasty things to eat. It was almost impossible to steer and the sails were very hard to adjust. They were lucky if it got anywhere. But — it was comfortable and roomy. Fish Cat and Bear Bear almost thought of it as a raft. They kept it on a small bay tied under a large willow tree. The branches of the willow tree spread out and covered it. Truly, the Sea Turkey looked like a piece of junk — but it floated — and it was a great place to be and just do nothing.

One day as they were repairing the Sea Turkey — something always seemed to need fixing — the bay turned a strange color. First it was a deep brown and then it turned orange colored. Finally it was a bright yellow. Then a large striped blue fish poked it's head out of the water — right near the boat — and said "follow me". Then it began to swim slowly away just below the surface of the water.

Fish Cat and Bear Bear could not resist this. Immediately they set sail and followed the strange blue fish. Also — they decided it was a good time to eat — and they began to munch on cookies — they had a huge bag of cookies. As they sailed, the strange blue fish seemed to get bigger and bigger — its top fin stuck up out of the water.

Suddenly in the middle of the bay, a huge island with steep cliffs rose up and on the side was a grotto — an opening into the island. The blue fish headed straight for the grotto — Fish Cat and Bear Bear hesitated but then followed the blue fish into the grotto. It was dark and gloomy inside but after awhile the way opened up and they saw sunlight at the other end. Inside the island the walls were very steep and the only place to land was on a small narrow beach — the strange blue fish was gone. The steep walls were covered with moss and ferns. The beach seemed to be safe and inviting — so they decided to land there and look around. They tied the Sea Turkey to a big piece of drift wood and got out and stood on the beach.

They got some honey and some nuts from the boat and sat down on two large rocks and began to eat. It was a strange place and it was very quiet. Suddenly the rock that Fish Cat was sitting on began to move and Fish Cat immediately jumped up. The rock turned into a big turtle. The other rock then turned into a big turtle and Bear Bear was dumped off of it.

The two green turtles crawled into the water — and the two depressions in the beach turned into fountains. Fish Cat and Bear Bear tasted the fountains and found — much to their surprise -- that the fountains were sweet and bubbly. One tasted like cherries and the other like apples.

They decided that it was best to leave — so they got back in the Sea Turkey. Suddenly there was a strange sound — a rumbling — they looked around and the walls around them were shrinking. The piece of drift wood turned into a basket full of pineapples and oranges. Then — in a flash the island sank into the bay — and the Sea Turkey and the basket floated gently on the water.

They sailed back to their willow tree towing the basket -- and eating a few oranges. No one would believe them if they told the story of what had happened — so they decided not to tell anyone. But from then on — they were always looking for the strange blue fish to appear again.
