The Palm Tree & The Bamboo -- The New Island

The Palm Tree and the Bamboo both had famous ancestors. Long, long ago one of the Palm Tree’s ancestors floated to an island -- to this island -- and a long line of Palm Trees flourished. The Bamboo, it is rumored, had an ancestor from Mandalay -- in fact -- the Great Bamboo of Mandalay.

The Palm Tree and the Bamboo were buddies -- but they argued a lot. Actually they disagreed on just about everything. But they both loved magic -- they tried to out do each other. No matter how special a thing one would do, the other would try to out do it. But secretly they admired the skills of the other.

One day as they swayed in the breeze -- they both loved the wind -- they would deflect it towards one another -- they decided to travel. They decided to REALLY travel. This was a big decision. It is not easy to travel when you have roots deep in the ground. But a decision is a decision.

So...magically the Bamboo lifted up his roots, shaking them free and shivering all over he shrank down and became a bright green beetle with orange eyes. With a sigh, the Palm Tree concentrated very hard and a single Coconut fell to the ground -- and the once proud and special Palm Tree became just an ordinary palm tree. BUT -- the Coconut was not just an ordinary coconut. It was filled with magic and it was covered with many small pearls. The Beetle climbed onto the Coconut and they rolled down to the ocean -- which swept them out to sea.

I can not tell you of the many places they almost landed or of the many

curious fish and sharks that came to inspect them. But -- one day they found the perfect place. They were the very first to land on a new island. The Beetle flew off and inspected the island and so -- to make a long story short -- the Beetle rolled back into the sea with the Coconut and they landed on a wide sandy beach in a beautiful bay.

Up the slope they rolled (a little magic goes a long way). Immediately they put down roots. The Bamboo grew quickly and surrounded the Palm Tree. Both felt very good about their luck and they decided to celebrate. Their long journey had taken them many places -- but this was home.

To celebrate, they both began to produce lots of sugar and candy. They were both covered with candy of every type -- and as if by magic -- actually it was not magic at all -- many birds came to feast on the candy. Things became very noisy and confused. But after a few days they stopped making candy and the birds left them in peace. But as usual they began to argue -- things were back to normal.

The local fishermen still tell about the time when the island was filled with many birds. The fishermen are wise -- they watch the birds carefully. But the birds know that the island is special -- for it has the magical Palm Tree and the Bamboo from Mandalay.
