The Crow & the Goat -- Almost Progress

The Goat who was wearing a cowboy hat was sitting in a pot surrounded by a lot of screwdrivers who were talking loudly to each other. All around the pot many noisy screwdrivers were jumping up and down and arguing with each other. Just then his friend, the Crow, flew down and perched on the edge of the pot.

“How did I ever get here?” complained the Goat. The Crow knew his friend well and said “...as I remember -- you thought you could make a quick profit by taking a short cut.” To this the Goat just snorted and said “I was just trying to be efficient.”

The Goat had a special ring on one of his horns. He rubbed it and his hairy coat turned from brown to blue and then to white. It became long and then shrank back to its normal length and back to brown. The Crow said that he wanted a hat so the Goat rubbed his special ring and created a chef’s hat for the Crow.

As they were talking, the pot melted down and began to rumble. The Goat and the Crow moved away from it. Suddenly it belched up water and lots of oranges. Almost immediately the water formed a broad circular river with the fountain of oranges and water both the source and the end of the river.

Very strange muttered the Crow. The Goat took off his cowboy hat and rubbed his ring turning the cowboy hat into an umbrella. He then floated it upside down in the river -- and then he got in it. The Crow jumped on board and used his chef’s hat as a large ballooning sail. Around and around they sailed and each time they passed through the fountain they got wet and got pelted with oranges.

The screwdrivers had all disappeared. We are going nowhere said the Crow. Nonsense said the Goat -- “Look how far we have traveled -- this is real progress.” To which the Crow said “progress is making orange juice -- not getting hit in the head with oranges.” Just then the fountain ran dry and the river melted away. They sat down and ate oranges in silence.

The Crow looked at the Goat and said “promise me -- no more short cuts.” Just then a bug flew by and fell down in front of them landing on its back. One leg wiggled wildly pointing to a nearby forest. The Crow and the Goat looked at each other and decided to try their luck in the forest.

The Goat rubbed his special ring and the umbrella changed into a green ribbon which he tied to his other horn. He rubbed his ring again and the chef’s hat changed into a bright red collar around the Crow’s neck. The Crow was very pleased. They got up and with handfuls of oranges they wandered off into the trees.
