Day Care Comfort CD

Many day care providers could use a basic vocabulary to speak with a child in the child’s native language. We plan to produce a CD using women's voices saying the phrases given below in different languages. It should help establish basic communication with children from other countries. The object is to create a more relaxed relationship.

1. How are you?…OK, fine…Not so good.

2. What is your name?…Ah, I see (understand)

3. How old are you?…1,2,3,…4,5,6

4. I am aunt (name)

5. I am uncle (name)

6. Are you hungry?…yes, no

7. Are you thirsty?…a little, a lot

8. Do you want to go to the bathroom?

9. Do you want me to carry you?

10. Are you sleepy?…Time to rest.

11. Your mother (father) will come here….soon, later.

12. Do you want to play?

13. Hi -- Do you want some (more)?

14. Do you want to...taste this?

15. Smell this?

16. Look at this...what a mess

17. Ah ha...listen to this.

18. Please...come here.

19. Don't touch...hot, cold.

20. Good...thank you.

21. Very pretty...beautiful.

22. Amazing...incredible.

23. I have to go away for awhile.

24. I'll be back...tomorrow.

25. Goodbye...See you later.

Our standard set of 25 languages will be used on the CD. These are; Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Tagalog, Turkish, Urdu, Tamil, Swahili, Hebrew & Punjabi.

Suggestions for the next 25 languages to be added are welcome. Ideally, the audio files and transcripts would be freely available online and the CDs would be distributed free or at a nominal cost. Financial support for this however would be required to set it up and maintain it. If such financing can be obtained the CD will be produced at cost (no profit).
